Baring Your Soul

28 Sep

My friend, Kim, is a beautiful and intense sort of girl. Never fake, always true and loyal, fierce and determined and courageous. She is also one of the most compassionate people I know. We did her portraits in studio about a week and a half after my brother Matthew, 37, was killed suddenly in a one car accident. I was distraught and quite unable to think or accomplish any task in my home. Kim had called to check on me and I threw out, “Want to come model for me for some studio shots?” By some miracle she was available. Photography has become my refuge, my escape. I am able to focus on creating beautiful images and stop the sadness in my mind if only for a few minutes at a time.
So, enter Kim. And beauty and strength and  raw emotion. At one point I brought up Matthew and the intense grief I was feeling. Kim teared up and we got this first shot. As friends we cried and grieved together. It will remain one my most poignant memories of my life, I think. Thank you, Kim.
